U.S.A. Renewed mobilisation to find alternatives to plastic bags
100 billion plastic bags are being used each year in the U.S.A. Less than 10% are recycled.
In a curious twist of history, Covid-19 led to an increase in the use of plastic bags. Reusable bags were suspected of transmitting a virus. However, disposable, single-use checkout bags was considered safer. This belief led to increased use of plastic cellophane wrapping during the pandemic, according to a study by The Freedonia Group. The United States alone uses more than 100 billion single-use plastic bags each year but less than 10% are recycled. More than 8 million tonnes of plastic waste are dumped into the oceans every year. Around the world and in the U.S.A., consumers are galvanised by the pandemic to reduce pollution and slow down climate change.
