Tesco sale in Asia pushes Thai conglomerates into the spotlight
As Tesco seeks a buyer in Asia for 1,967 stores in Thailand and 74 stores in Malaysia, with the Tesco Lotus brand being valued at US$9 billion, the power of family controls, anti-competition and un-economic concentration is under surveillance. After first offers from the giants Charoen Pokphand Group (turnover of US$3.3 billion during the six months ended June 30, 2019), Central Group (turnover of US$13 billion in 2018) and TCC Group controlled by billionaire Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, the British retailer requested further bids.
