Edeka Zurheide, The Concept of the Month
Whilst supporting ‘Euroshop’ G.R.N. reviewed the very high-end supermarket Edeka Zurheide (on Berliner Allee, 10 minutes from Düsseldorf central station). Halfway between retail and gastronomy, this store format has been continuously going upmarket since opening 2 years ago. With a huge sales area of 10,000 sq.m spanned across 2 floors and 9 restaurants; this store represented an investment of €20 million. From 200 staff, 1 out of 8 is a chef. The store houses a gourmet restaurant called ‘Setzkasten’ with 60 seats over 880 sq.m. The chef Anton Pahl received a Michelin star in early March 2020. There is a ‘Pythagoras’ vegetarian restaurant, a smoothie bar, a pastry shop with pies and chocolates made on site, a mozzarella bar plus a 700 sq.m area for fruits and vegetables with natural wood finishes.
